Nokia Push for 4G
Mobile network giants Nokia, Sony Ericsson, NEC and Alacatel-Lucent have each signed up to a licensing framework for their patents for the emerging mobile standard, which has been christened Long Term Evolution (LTE).
That’s 4G to us.
LTE is, they say, the logical progression from 3G systems and the technology is to be marketed as a solution for mobile phones, laptops and even fixed broadband connections, eventually replacing wi-fi.
Conversely silicon giants Intel believes their Wimax technology to be the future of wireless communications.
Speaking to the BBC, Intel’s Paul Otellini that they expected Wimax take up to total 10 million people by next year alone, with at least a 1000% increase two years later.
“We see Wimax as the most cost-effective way to deliver high-bandwidth wireless broadband.”
Sounds like a Blu Ray and HD DVD all over again…
