Copy/Paste comes to iPhone?

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

3giphone.jpgReports indicate that the much maligned lack of a copy/paste feature on the current iPhone 3G is set to be resolved in the near future with the release of an OS update.

The Apple iPhone OS 2.1 is also expected to include new GPS functionality as well as internet radio support, but it is the presence of a simple function - pioneered by Apple back in their formative years - that is likely to bring more users to the device.

Selling the iPhone 3G as a productivity tool and then missing out the ability to cut, copy or paste text or mail addresses is about as useless as selling a TV without a screen.  The fact that the device got through QA testing without anyone raising alarm bells is tantamount to confirmation that the iPhone 3G was rushed through production.

Now, has anyone at Apple got any plans to add a video camera?

I Am Rich/I Am Dim

Monday, August 11th, 2008

iamrich.jpgUsers of the Apple iPhone 3G application store were caught unawares by a high ticket item recently - so unawares, in fact, that they forked out $1000 on an app that does nothing!

$1000!

And yet, it’s not like it wasn’t obvious.  The item description reads:

“The red icon on your iPhone or iPod Touch always reminds you (and others when you show it to them) that you were rich enough to afford this. It’s a work of art with no hidden function at all.”

Although not breaching any regulations, the item was pulled - but not after 8 buyers lined the pockets of creator XX, who was puzzled as to why the item was removed.

“I have no idea why they did it and am not aware of any violation of the rules to sell software on the App Store”

He has a point.  Especially with those who forked out for it opining bitterly.

“I saw this app with a few friends and we jokingly clicked ‘buy’ thinking it was a joke, to see what would happen.”

Hey dude, why not stick your hands in a mains terminal and “see what happens”…?

iPhone Sickness

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

3giphone.jpgIt would be pretty stupid of The Gadget Monkey to dismiss out of hand the success of the iPhone, and the impact that the device has made - not least on this site’s audience figures.

However regardless of the enforced hype/early launch (they’re not exactly short on stock in the UK at the moment, although that might be less to do with Apple and more to do with people tightening their belts) the last coupld of months has proved to demonstrate exactly what tis site was set up for.

On our About page, you can see:

…an independently-run portable hardware (gadget) review blog, intended for use both as a buyer’s guide and a record of attitudes and opinions to various products. In time, these attitudes and opinions will provide a unique reflection of prevailing attitudes to technology in the early 21st century.

We’ve already - as a gadget-centric society - gone bananas for the Apple iPhone 3G.  What is next?

Apple’s iPhone Woe

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

3giphone.jpgA slick new advertising campaign on UK television can only draw attention to the fact that not only was the iPhone 3G launch the worst organised event since Olaf the Hairy ordered 6000 viking helmets with the horns on the inside, the actual hardware itself isn’t up to scratch.

There are reports across the web of devices freezing, being remarkably delicate compared to the 2G predecessor on top of all the launch day blues with crashing networks and the like.  Better still are the vast array of failings in the device, such as the lack of a video camera and the persistent presence of a 2mp camera - not to mention the jaw dropping lack of a cut and paste function (a technology championed by Apple and ever more vital today).

To add insult to injury for Apple and their iPhone customers, the device has been compared to Microsoft’s Vista operating system amid claims that the device was rush-released.

Independent analyst Rob Enderle says. “A star product like the iPhone does a lot of great things for Apple, but when things go wrong, it can bring down the entire image of a company.”

What’s more, I’m sick to death of hearing about it.  I just want my busted Vario II back home.

UK iPhone 3G Shortage Over At Last

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

3giphone.jpgThe o2 website continues to be without Apple iPhone 3G stock to sell online - however stock levels appear to be on the rise, with Saturday’s list (below) featuring a huge range of o2 stores across the UK.

Furthermore, there is still the opportunity to purchase from Carphone Warehouse, meaning ultimately that the iPhone 3G shortage can pretty much be considered over.

Here’s the list…

Low Apple iPhone 3G Stock

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Just when we think the insane shortage of Apple iPhone 3G devices at stores of UK carrier o2 is over - they announce another shortage.

Just 4 stores in the UK are stocking the devices today, according to o2.co.uk

Store Name Address Opening Time Closing Time
Belfast - Castle Lane 14-16 Castle Lane, BELFAST, Northern Ireland, BT1 5DA 09:00 17:30
Omagh Unit 4 Main treet, OMAGH, Northern Ireland, BT78 1BA 10:00 17:30
Newry Unit 6, Buttercrane Shopping Centre, NEWRY, Northern Ireland, BT35 8HJ 10:00 21:00
Leicester - Gallowtree 37 Gallowtree Gate, LEICESTER, Leicestershire, LE1 5AD 09:00 18:00

It’s all getting a bit beyond a joke now… for personal use, I’ve finally made a decision on my mobile phone future and it’s the going to be a superior WM 6.1 device.

Why?

Simple - the Apple iPhone 3G doesn’t have a video camera, comes with an insulting 2mp static camera… and I can’t use it as a modem, which frankly is unacceptable.

Plus with a new mobile browser now available on WinMo devices, the slickness that Apple’s most wanted product yet in the UK is just a gadget too far…
