I have never entered a photography competition before – in fact my interest in photography, although long-standing, has only recently become something I’m actively engaged in. Most of what I’ve been doing has been digital photography with post processing filters used to great an “old world” look – however I’ve also been snapping countryside, landmarks and family.

So it was pretty cool to find out about the Lloyds TSB British weather photographer of the year competition, as I had the perfect entry piece!

Open to UK residents only, the competition can be entered by uploading a suitably striking image of British weather to the link above; excitingly, the entries are not only judged by photographers by meteorologists as well! Ensure your image has the right mix of flair, technique and originality – I’m not sure how well I will fare with the first two qualities, but I’m pretty confident that this is an original composition.

As the competition has been running since April 13th – and closes on September 30th, 2010 – the Lloyds TSB website already has a great selection of submitted entries, so you can take a good look at what you’re up against.

It would be really great if you would also take the time to visit the Lloyds TSB website and vote for my entry “A morning freeze”, which I feel is a much different image to many of those already submitted. Whereas the popular choice has been sweeping, majestic views of landscape or close-ups, I’ve opted for a more suburban view of the weather – as you can see, my entry into the British weather photographer of the year competition features a freezing, hanging fog eerily taking hold of a children’s playground.

Sony have recently revealed details of a new ultra-compact DSLR camera with interchangeable lenses in development for launch 2010.

In 2010 Sony will introduce a new ultra-compact camera with interchangeable lenses (Distagon T* 24mm f/2 ZA SSM 24mm, new Carl Zeiss wide angle lens and Super Telephoto 500mm f/4 G Lens) that teams “any time, anywhere” convenience with DSLR picture quality. Exhibited in early concept mock-up form at PMA, the camera features a newly-developed Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor. It will also support HD video recording using the efficient AVCHD format.

Shown in concept mock-up form at PMA is a successor to the α700, Sony’s acclaimed mid-range camera body that has found favour with ‘prosumers’ and enthusiasts. Further new α DSLR cameras are meanwhile scheduled for launch in 2010.
