Not so much a gadget but a piece of extremely functional headwear, the Dalek Voice Changer Helmet allows kids of all ages to act out Dalek-inspired Doctor Who universe fantasies without going to the trouble of investing in the the lower half of the outfit.

With the necessary lights and voice demodulator, the helmet comfortably sits on the head of any child, 8-80.

The lack of a body (imagine the bizarre sght of a human-Dalek-child) can of course only mean one thing – the only real purpose for the Dalek Voice Changer Helmet can be to perform Doctor Who-styled Punch and Judy shows…

This is one of those Tomorrow’s World items from the 1980s – a headset that lets the wearer immerse themselves in a movie or video game.

The ezVision Video iWear weighs just over 200g, and while that might be light enough to not cause any lasting neck or shoulder strain, it doesn’t create the best quality picture. The battery lasts 8 hours, and the device comes with an A/C wall charger, RCA video cable and iPod video cable

However it is a good price, available online for around £150, and it is of course light and compact enough to be worn on a plane or anywhere you may be a passenger.

Stereo vision is of course nothing new – there was a trend for taking two photos from slightly differing angles in order to mount them on some freakishly big glasses with the result of a 3-D image, but this died out in the mid 20th century.

There is a future in video glasses, but I don’t think ezVision have got a killer app on their hands with this.

Some former colleagues and I purchased one of these a year or so ago, and I have to say that the most recent version is a much improved model.

With built in camera and the facility to be control, aim and launch the missiles via MSN, this USB device is one of the most pointlessly brilliant pieces of hardware of the computer age.

Curiously though, it’s specified as requiring a 2.4Ghz CPU – I haven’t yet been ale to verify this, but it does seem unlikely for what is basically a moving web cam.

Clocking in at around £50, the device is the perfect office toy, and lots of fun.

Doctor Who fans take note!

The 18″ version of the radio controlled Dalek - selling for £100 before Christmas – has been spotted for astonishingly low prices, with Play.com flogging the sentry-functioning cat-scarer for £79, Tesco’s shipping it off for just £50!

A perfect companion to the shorter 12″ little brother, it is certainly sturdier and well able to deal with even the most over-fed cats.

The toy really impresses when you see how it reponds to touch – usally from the household pets and rugrats, but also static obstacles. It can also act as a sentry and responds to vocal commands.

So take care with your babies and pets; don’t let them get too close for comfort, lest the massive 18″ Dalek sentry takes issue and barks EXTERMINATE!
